Let’s be honest. When most people hear the word “yoga,” they picture someone in activewear doing something impressive with their legs. Maybe a pretzel shape. Maybe a headstand.
That’s not us. And it doesn’t have to be you either.
Chair yoga is exactly what it sounds like: all the good stuff about yoga, the breathing, the stretching, the lovely calm-your-nervous-system goodness, done while you’re sitting in a chair. No floor. No Lycra required.
So what’s actually in it for you?
Quite a lot, as it turns out. Research from Harvard Health Publishing points to a genuinely impressive list of benefits from regular yoga practice, including less stress, reduced back and joint pain, better sleep, sharper memory, and even lower risk of heart disease. Not bad for something you can do in an everyday chair.
And chair yoga specifically? Studies on older adults with osteoarthritis found that just two sessions a week led to less pain and fatigue. Another study found people were better able to manage their daily activities after a 12-week chair yoga program. A third showed greater stress reduction from chair yoga than from walking or aerobics classes.

Again, all of that, from a chair.
Who is it for?
Anyone who wants it. Chair yoga is especially brilliant if you:
- find balancing tricky
- have joint pain or stiffness
- haven’t exercised in a while (or a long while)
- feel like traditional yoga isn’t “for people like me”
That last one is kind of our whole thing at Meet Move Eat. Because movement is for people like you. It just might look a little different, and that’s completely fine. We provide variations for every body – the cardboard cut outs to the rubber bands.
